Your Residency

WHO SHOULD APPLY

Open internationally to artists and artist educators working in painting, drawing, and mixed media. Emerging, mid-career, and established artists are welcome, whether developing existing work or exploring new directions.

WHAT’S INCLUDED

Residents receive dedicated workspace in RAAL’s shared studio, Figure Drawing, a professional Artist Interview, artist profile and promotion, help finding local accommodation, and opportunities to present their work or propose a workshop.

WHAT WE ASK FROM YOU

Come ready to work and engage with the RAAL community. There is no required project or finished body of work. We simply ask each resident to share something through an Artist Talk, Open Studio, exhibition, workshop, or community conversation.

WANT TO TEACH A WORKSHOP?

Bring something you love doing into the community. Residents are invited to propose a workshop during or immediately following their residency, offering a chance to share your skills, meet local artists and participants, and extend your experience beyond the studio. Workshops are completely optional and considered separately from residency selection.

A Place To Create

River Aude Artists Lab invites artists to spend 2, 3 or 4 weeks working in Quillan, a small medieval town in the foothills of the Pyrenees in southern France.

RAAL is a nonprofit arts organization in both France and the United States, offering artists time, space, community, and support to develop their work, experiment, and explore new directions.

From The Studio

Resident Artist Gail Borowski

Artist Gail Borowski spent three weeks at RAAL in summer 2026, working in the studio, exploring the Upper Aude Valley, and becoming part of the creative community around the Lab. In this short film, Gail reflects on the work she made, the people and places she encountered, and what having dedicated time away from everyday life gave her as an artist. Her experience offers a glimpse into what a residency at RAAL can be: time to work, explore, connect, and see where the experience takes you.
